Writing · Type-by-type frame + wongoji rules
It is easy to think writing comes by itself if you are good at Korean. But TOPIK writing fixes a frame for the expected answer in each question type, so without that frame you do not score even with real ability.
After this card, you will see why knowing the frame of each type in Questions 51–54 and the format that avoids deductions (written style, wongoji, spelling) comes first.
You are preparing for Writing Question 54 (the long essay). What helps raise your score first?
TOPIK writing is not a test of unusual ideas. It checks whether you identified the format each question requires (filling a blank, describing data, an argument essay) and filled that frame with suitable expressions. So the person who first knows what frame this type wants, before asking what to write, has the advantage.
Questions 51 and 52 are short problems where you put in one or two sentences that fit the context, so matching the flow and agreement around the blank is enough. Question 53 is a descriptive text turning data such as a graph or table into sentences, and Question 54 is a long text on one topic with an introduction, body, and conclusion. You cannot prepare all four the same way, and for Question 54, which carries the most points, frame practice is a must.
It is a waste to lose points on format when the content is good. Writing must be in written style such as -습니다/-ㄴ다 (formal written endings), and spoken style or casual speech is penalized. Mistakes in wongoji (Korean manuscript grid paper) use (filling the squares, punctuation, spacing) and in spelling also cost points. Because these formats are rules, learning them ahead makes them points you can surely keep.
Writing is a section that improves through the hands, not by learning with the eyes. Write on real wongoji (or an answer sheet format) under time, and your own weak points show: too little length, or too much time. Correct what you wrote yourself in the order expression, spelling, and logic, and collect your frequent mistakes like a wrong-answer notebook.
Writing is preparation in knowing the frame and format of each type, not a talent for writing well.
TOPIK writing fixes the expected answer frame for each type. Tell Questions 51, 52, 53, and 54 apart, learn the 서론-본론-결론 frame and linking expressions for Question 54 in particular, and block format deductions such as written style, wongoji, and spelling ahead of time. Above all, practice writing by hand under time; that is what makes the score. On the Minimum Pass Track, focus on the Questions 51–53 frames and avoiding format deductions; on the Full Score Track, refine the logic and expression of Question 54 to aim for a high score.
