Listening 43–44 Documentary
Listening · Hard
Item 43 (main idea) only
You listen to a documentary narration and answer two items. Item 43 asks you to choose the main idea running through the whole narration — what it is ultimately about — while item 44 asks you to check whether one piece of detail in the narration matches what you actually heard. The topics are often ones that call for specialized knowledge — natural ecology, traditional crafts, scientific phenomena. Rather than a dialogue, a single narrator strings information together in a calm, even tone, so the information density is high, and long, complex sentences that pack cause and effect, or a definition and an example, into one sentence keep appearing. On top of that, abstract nouns rarely used in everyday conversation — like '서식지', '정화 작용', '퇴적물' — repeat throughout, so even if you can parse the sentence structure, the meaning will not connect unless you already know the vocabulary. Still, remember that this section is worth the same 2 points as any other item. The perceived difficulty is higher, but the point value is identical to item 1. So if you are aiming for Level 3, a realistic strategy is to lock down item 43 (main idea) and only attempt item 44 if you have time left over. The main idea is usually settled by the topic named in the opening sentence or two, so how closely you focus on that first sentence directly drives your accuracy.
Documentary
- 서식지 — The place where plants and animals settle and live. Often used in the forms '~을 서식지로 삼다' and '~에 서식하다'.
- 개체 수 — The count of individuals belonging to a given species. Appears paired with predicates that show increase or decrease, such as '개체 수가 급감하다/회복되다'.
- 고유종 — A species that occurs naturally only in a specific region. Similar to '토종' (native species), but used more often in academic documentary narration.
- 복원하다 — To return something to its original state before it was damaged. Appears often in ecology and cultural-heritage documentaries as '~을 복원하는 작업'.
- 명맥을 잇다 — For a tradition or skill to continue on without breaking off. Used in traditional-craft documentaries as '몇 대째 명맥을 잇고 있다'.
- 전수되다 — For a skill or knowledge to be passed down, from master to apprentice or from an older to a younger generation. Often used in the passive form.
- 부산물 — Something that arises incidentally in the process of making or handling something else. Used in both positive and negative contexts.
- 관측되다 — To be scientifically confirmed and recorded through instruments or observation. Often used as the predicate in documentaries about natural phenomena.
- ~로 알려져 있다 — A discourse marker used to present information as commonly accepted fact rather than an assertion. Often attached after a definition or explanation in narration.
- 이는 ~때문이다 — A definition/cause-and-effect marker that explains, in the following sentence, the cause of the result stated just before. A typical sentence pattern in documentary narration.
- 재평가하다 — To newly judge, and judge more highly, something previously regarded as having little value. Often appears near the closing of a documentary, as in '재평가하려는 움직임'.
- 순환 구조 — A structure in which matter or energy flows in one direction and eventually returns to its starting point. Often used in documentaries about ecosystems and resources.
- A key noun repeated in the opening — the documentary's subject
- Discourse markers that signal cause-and-effect or definition ('그 결과', '이는 ~때문이다', '~로 알려져 있다')
- Reevaluation or outlook expressions that appear in the closing sentence ('다시 평가하려는', '~로 이어지고 있다')
- Pin down the documentary's subject (what it is about) from the opening sentence or two
- Follow, in order, the key principle or process explained in the sentences that follow
- Scan item 44's options first and mark the moment when a noun or figure mentioned in them comes up
- Confirm the main idea once more from the summarizing or outlook expression in the final sentence
- Confusing the subject named in the opening with a supporting detail from later on, and mistaking a minor point for the main idea
- Missing that a word from an option, even when it is heard verbatim in the narration, is used with an opposite or exaggerated meaning in context
The perceived difficulty is high, but the item is worth the same 2 points as any other. If you are aiming for Level 3, secure item 43 (main idea) and attempt item 44 only if time remains.
