Listening 33–34 What the Talk Is About + Matching Details

Aim for item 33 (the topic) only
Items 33–34 are not a dialogue but a monologue where one person explains a specific topic. Item 33 asks you to choose what this talk is about, and item 34 asks you to choose the option that matches its details. Unlike dialogue items, there is only one speaker, so there are fewer cues to lean on from vocal tone — you have to grasp the topic and the details from the content structure alone. The most common mistake in item 33 is mistaking a specific example that follows '예를 들어' (for example) for the topic itself. The talk typically presents the subject in its opening sentence or two, and the middle section is filled with examples that support that subject. No matter how specific or striking an example is, remember that it is not the topic — it is just a case illustrating the topic. The correct answer in the matching item 34 often comes from a reversal or supplementary sentence in the latter half of the talk ('다만', '그런데', '~만은 아니다' — however, but, it's not just that). The classic structure presents a common assumption or general explanation early on, then flips it in the latter half with 'actually, it's different.' Picking an answer hastily from the early content alone is an easy way to fall into the trap. Because the talk runs longer than the earlier dialogue-style items and uses higher-level vocabulary, items 33–34 are among the hardest-feeling parts of the whole Listening section. If you're short on time, it's realistic to aim for at least nailing item 33 (the topic) for sure.
What the Talk Is About + Matching Details
A topic-introducing expression at the start of the talk that signals what it will cover.
A signal word showing that what follows is not the topic but a case supporting the topic.
A signal word showing that information reversing or supplementing the earlier assumption follows.
A partial-negation expression meaning not a complete denial, just that only part of it is true.
A restatement/emphasis expression that sums up the preceding content in other words to drive the point home again.
A common-assumption expression that signals a reversal is coming next.
A sentence pattern in the middle of the talk that explains a cause.
An expression that gives the conclusion or outlook toward the end of the talk.
A contrast structure that explains change by contrasting the past with the present. When this structure appears, that change itself is often the topic.
A sentence pattern that explains the purpose of some action.
A degree/scale expression that lets you infer a scale without stating a number directly.
- The topic-introducing sentence at the start of the talk ('최근 ~다', '~가 늘면서' — recently ~, as ~ increases)
- A concrete example starting with '예를 들어' (for example) — this is support, not the topic itself
- A reversal or supplementary point introduced by '다만' or '그런데' (however, but)
- Grasp what the talk is about from the first two introductory sentences
- Don't mistake the example that follows '예를 들어' (for example) for the topic
- Remember that in matching items, the answer often comes from a reversal or supplementary sentence in the latter half of the talk
- Filter out options that reuse a word from the talk but flip the actual fact
- Mistaking a single example for the whole topic
- Missing a partial-negation sentence like '~만은 아니다' or '~은 아니고' and getting the facts backwards
Locking down item 33 (the topic) alone is worthwhile. If you're short on time, item 34's matching question can be given lower priority since the talk runs long.
