Listening 29–30 Inferring the Man's Occupation + Matching
Listening · Upper-Intermediate
Item 29 is an occupation-inference item — caught through vocabulary
Items 29–30 are also a set based on a single conversation. Item 29 asks you to infer what occupation the man in the conversation has, and item 30 asks for the option that matches the content of the conversation. No sentence states the occupation directly — you can only guess it from the specific tasks, actions, and vocabulary that person uses. The real barrier in this type is, in the end, vocabulary. If you know expressions like '원고를 검토하다' ('review a manuscript') or '문단 구성을 잡다' ('work out the paragraph structure'), the answer 'editor' becomes obvious right away, but without knowing this task-related vocabulary, it's hard to narrow down the occupation even after hearing the whole conversation. Put the other way, this is an efficient item for the effort involved — simply learning the task vocabulary that commonly appears for each occupation group can significantly raise your accuracy. The matching item at 30 often mixes up the words of the conversation's two speakers to create confusion. Wrong options frequently swap what one person said to make it look like the other person said it, or reverse the direction of advice (e.g., facing away from / facing toward). As you listen to the conversation, you need to keep track of 'who said this' by speaker. Even if you can't identify the occupation in item 29, item 30 is a separate detail-checking item, so don't give up — going back over the specific conditions can still earn you partial points.

- For item 30, listen to distinguish who said what by speaker
- Hastily deciding on an occupation based on just one word in the conversation (e.g., picking 'writer' just because '책' [book] came up)
- In matching items, mistaking the other person's words for the main speaker's words
Item 29 is a solid item you can secure just by catching the vocabulary. It's good to get item 30 too, but if you're short on time, focus mainly on item 29.
